JOURNALISM
Okay, so here’s the nuts and bolts about my line of work. Click on the relevant magazine titles and you will see a list of pieces I have had included therein, complete with some samples of work. As you may already know, I’ve been working as a freelance journalist since 2000 and became a member of the NUJ in 2002.
The majority of my work has been based around features, but I have done undercover work, the occasional celebrity interview and some travel writing. I - like any other journalist - am always on the look out for new and interesting stories, so if you have anything that you feel may be of interest to a national audience, please don’t hesitate to contact me at work@dannybourne.com.
Journalism is a notoriously insecure profession, but something that I truly enjoy doing. There’s something very satisfying about seeing an article in print that you have researched and written that potentially millions of people will read and, hopefully, enjoy. Even though I have been a journalist for four years, I still consider myself a relative neophyte, but it is definitely an area of my work which I would like to expand. I have yet to work directly for any newspapers, so there is one area into which I am looking to move. Hopefully, I will get to the position where my writing will change from part- to full-time and therefore gradually take over from the television work.
TELEVISION
I am a partner in Bourne Associates (bourneass@aol.com, 0208 670 3130, rates), a television post production and transcription company started by my parents - Bill and Dee - way back in 1981. I joined them in 1989 - mainly as a way of earning some money whilst studying at university. Over the years, the company has been involved in literally thousands of television programmes for all the terrestrial TV channels. Originally, we simply did interview transcription, but gradually expanded into dialogue and PasC (Production as Completed) scripts - very much a niche market. The majority of the work has been in documentaries, but we have also worked on the occasional game show, light entertainment programme and even dramas and films. (My three favourites of all time being Hartswood Productions’ Men Behaving Badly, Mentorn’s Robot Wars, and Simon Schama’s History of Britain for the BBC). Unfortunately, you won’t see our name on the end credits of any programmes, so we therefore rely on word of mouth and the contacts list of all those lovely Production Managers/Production Assistants that we have met over the years. Thanks!
I have always worked in post production - in fact PasC work is generally one of the last things done in any production - but have often thought about getting into production, and maybe even make my own documentaries rather than simply working on those made by other people.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Although I’ve been taking photographs for years, I started taking pictures properly in 2004. As with most things, it’s been a steep learning curve, but it’s one of those few things that you can actually enjoy as a hobby that can also become a job. So far I have had photographs appear in The Steel Press, The Sun, the Daily Mail, Ladsmag, FHM, Loaded, Nuts, Zoo, Scarlet and various local newspapers – I’ve also done work for various websites and club promotions.
For those who are interested, you can find out what kit I use by clicking here. I consider myself to be fashion/commercial photographer. I also enjoy shooting architecture - particularly nightscapes – but most of my commissions are either portfolio or glamour based.
