I’ve long been a board war gamer - a dying breed in the world of computers - but there’s something eminently satisfying about moving cardboard armies across a map of Europe or some such, crushing all before you. Board war gaming probably weighs in on the intellectual end of geekism, but, in reality, it’s little different to the amusing Time Commanders series that was on BBC2 not so long ago. Personal favourites of mine have to be Avalon Hill’s Battle of the Bulge and The Russian Campaign, SPI’s Bastogne, Great Battles of Alexander by GMT and Clash of Arms’ Armee du Nord. Note that, in my opinion, Axis and Allies or anything produced by Games Workshop doesn’t count.
