My local is the Rosendale, a swanky pub/pizzeria in Dulwich (and often frequented by celebs such as Kate Thornton) and have become their resident photographer for any functions/do's that they have. I used to drink at the East Dulwich Tavern: a decent pub on the corner of Goose Green that used to be famous for its comedy nights (Now held further up Lordship Lane at the Magdala, owned by none other than Steve Frost). Beers that get the current thumbs up from me are London Pride, Kronenbourg 1664, Stella and Staropramen. I used to drink Newcastle Brown Ale (ah, the wonders of being a student), but tried it again after a long abstinence and realised just how much crap there is in it.

That said, there’s a new (well relatively new) kid on the block in the form of subcontinent beers. Not only are brews like Kingfisher, Tiger and, particularly, Cobra easy on the palette, they also come in spankingly large 600ml bottles which can be used as natty house decorations, vases or supersized Molotov cocktails if you feel that way inclined. I find it one of life’s ironies that Indian beers such as Tiger and Cobra are better than all the British beers that are known as India Pale Ales. Confusing, eh?

One of the pinnacles of my journalism career was a trip to the (as it was called then) Burton Beer Museum - it’s called the Coors Visitor Centre or somesuch now - where you could actually do a day’s course learning how to brew beer. You could even, for a price, have the beery fruits of your labours crated and delivered to your door - with your own, personalised label - six weeks later. Now tell me that isn’t a good idea! And remember, hops are closely related to cannabis.

You can actually smoke hop resin - and I’d like to see someone try to get the growing of hops criminalised. I doubt that ganja makes decent beer, however.
